The wireless charging industry is in the midst of a boom, and with it, the possibilities for wireless charging.
It’s no longer the domain of just big brands and established manufacturers, but a lot of smaller startups.
In fact, just this week, we learned that wireless charging is coming to Apple Watch.
The big question, though, is whether that’s enough for you to consider it.
According to a recent study from research firm Canalys, over 80 per cent of Canadians are considering buying a wireless charging kit.
That’s up from 58 per cent in 2015, and just 34 per cent a year earlier.
Canalys noted that while most people who use a wireless device have already switched to charging with a smartphone, most people don’t have the time or money to invest in an extra charging cable or an additional power adapter.
The biggest issue is that wireless devices are getting more expensive.
A typical wireless charging pad currently sells for about $30, while the cost of a standard wireless charger can range up to $100, and a new generation of wireless charging pads costs between $150 and $300.
But there’s hope for those who want a little bit more power for their Apple Watch without breaking the bank.
According for the first time in a Canalys report, wireless charging technology is getting a lot more mainstream.
The study found that wireless power can be used in almost any kind of Apple Watch or Apple Watch Pro accessory.
For instance, a wireless Apple Watch with a micro USB charging port is capable of powering up to two Apple Watch bands, and two Apple Watches with standard wireless charging are capable of charging two Apple devices simultaneously.
“It’s no secret that the market for wireless power accessories is growing, and we’ve seen that the average price of an Apple Watch band has increased from $20 to $50 since 2015,” said Ian McWilliams, the head of product strategy at Canalys.
“The fact that the technology is becoming more mainstream and is being widely adopted is a great sign that we’re on the right track.”
McWilliams also pointed out that the growing popularity of wireless power in the wireless accessory market has resulted in some new competitors entering the fray.
“With the introduction of new wireless charging technologies, there’s a chance that wireless charger manufacturers will be able to compete with established wireless power companies and will see new competition emerge.”
As wireless charging becomes more mainstream, it’s important that consumers take note of how it can be applied to their device.
The average Apple Watch has over 150 different charging methods, and most are designed to be as efficient as possible.
It takes a lot less power to charge your Apple Watch than it does to charge an iPhone or a smartphone.
“If you have an Apple watch and you need to charge two Apple watches simultaneously, you’d need a charger that’s about $100,” said McWilliams.
“That’s a lot to spend on a charger.
It costs the same as buying a standard Apple charger.”
If you need more power and don’t want to pay extra for an extra cable, a $30 wireless charger is just fine.
But if you need a larger amount of power than an iPhone charger, a more powerful charger like the Qi wireless charger might be a better option.
